Summer ramblings

We are going through some changes here so I hope you will all bear with us. We are totally reorganizing the warehouse. Hopefully this will make our winter go more smoothly. And we have hit the age where a forklift is a necessity not a luxury. Yes we man-handled all of our shipments until now!

But on a brighter note. We have just gotten in stock an incredible Night Vision Scope made by Zeiss/Eltro Optics. This is a model 80/I and it was used by the German Bundeswehr. It is still in the orginal suitcase style packing and it comes with 3 original mounts. An HK made G3 claw mount with the adapter plate, a MG3 Lafette tripod mount with an adapter plate, a Pzf 3/PzF 44 grenade launcher mount  and a quick change adapter that is attached to the scope. This one can be mounted on a Picatinny rail or directly to a Stanag mount.  Be sure to check this one out as you will be sorry you missed it for only $600.

I hope everyone has taken some time out for summer sports…target shooting, hunting, maybe some fishing and still had time for the kids in our lives.  We were pleased to have our grandson with us for a few weeks. He was a big 5 year old helper loading our trucks for the shows and helping get the barn ready for fall. It is amazing what a little one can do if you just make room for them.

I want to extend our congratulations to my brother-in-law for winning the All Thompson Match 2011 here in Ohio this August. He said he was quite surprised when they called his name! Needless to say he won the match with ammo he bought from us, Tula brand from Russia. So for those that think they can’t use steel cased ammo guess again!

It looks like the Romanian 8mm is all gone now. There might be odd cans popping up here and there but the bulk is gone. Those of you that got in on the last we had congratulations and happy shooting!

That’s going to do it for me today.

Keep your powder dry!

Sorry California

In case you haven’t heard California will be returning to recording keeping for handgun ammunition starting February 1 2011.  To buy handgun ammunition in California from a dealer you must be thumb printed and present a valid ID. I can’t do either of these things for my customers in California. So this is my official notice to my California customers I will not be shipping handgun ammunition into your state for your personal use after February 1 2011.  Good luck with your crime problem. I’m truly sorry.

But this is also an official notice that I will continue to watch  and fight against any such law coming to my state or the nation as a whole. We as citizen’s can not allow our entire foundation to be torn away while we watch.  Are you really willing to wait until the wolf is at your door?

Merry Christmas from the BATF your rights belittled! again

http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Read.aspx?ID=6103 … I’m starting this post with a link to a NRA-ILA document.  So that you know I’m not working on hearsay or rumor. Under the guise of keeping us safer from the evil problems on the Mexican border the BATF is proposing that the President just mandate that Americans can only buy 1 semi-auto rifle during any 5 day period. The agency doesn’t want to bother the Congress with passing a law they just want the President to take care of it behind the scene. You have time to let your voice be heard as there is a place to send your comments on yet another piece of gun control. But is this gun control or is this just more citizen control?

The BATF has decided that this is the best way to control the guns crossing the border,  by putting roadblocks in the way of a legal rifle purchase. It is supposed to slow down the process to give them time to come in and investigate.  I can hear many saying what ‘s the problem with that if it helps? That answer is very simple, anything that stops me as a regular person who obeys the law and is a citizen of the USA from buying any gun I want and can afford is a breach of the rights accorded to me by our Constitution. Suspending  or removing my rights will not stop the criminal.

So this post is just a little PSA. Make yourself heard and don’t let them think they can get away with this while the Nation is on Christmas Vacation.

Why Doesn’t my Mag fit?

Buying accessories for your firearm is supposed to be easy. You just have to know which gun you have then you get the right extras for it and you’re home easy ready to shoot. Well, maybe not so fast. Many of today’s receivers have been made by many different companies to many ever so slightly different specs. That brand new mag just might not work. I had a customer this weekend buy a commercially produced Korean AK 47 drum. It is patterned after the original Chinese ones that had come in years ago. And it is great fun to shoot. So he took it back to his table and his buddy wanted to try it in his new AK he’d just bought. But it wouldn’t fit. It was just too wide to fit the magazine well.  What was wrong? He brought it back and I had to start asking questions. I know the drum will fit most AK’s that take a “double stack” mag. Did the rifle he had just tried it in have skinny mags? Oh yea. Luckily his didn’t so he shouldn’t have the same problem. The AK’s importers have had to put up with regulatory roadblocks that have been thrown at them by various Administration to be able to continue to sell their imported firearms. So some of the ‘Sporting Rifles” have come in, in various configurations the slim design signal stack mag being one.

Magpull mags

AR15 mags by Magpull

Commercially made receivers will possibly be a little different as well. Magpull a well respected AR15/M16 mag maker has come out with a slightly slimmer designed mag that fits many more AR type rifles than it’s standard work horse style make that works so well. The Export Mag or “E-mag”  was made to  fit  European designed receivers such as the HK 416, FN-SCAR, British SA-80, Berretta ARX-160, IMI TAVOR and so on. But it works equally as well with the the AR15/M16 receiver. But again mag fit is all in the magwell dimensions.

We also carry the Korean  manufactured”Glock style” mags in 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45 ACP. At a recent Chantilly show we had one brought back because it didn’t fit. During a slow spot John went over to a friend’s table , Tony Wilcox, who is a firearms dealer. He happened to have about 6 used Glocks on the table from a PD. They were all the same caliber so John tried that mag in all the 6 guns. It fit in 2. It was the same mag but all the guns mag wells were DIFFERENT.

So just a piece of advice. To be sure you are happy with your mags just bring your gun with you try it out see if it fit. We will do the work before hand to try to be sure to bring you products that will stand up to use and work well. But understand there are a lot of variations out there!

Bonded Ammunition from Winchester

When we sell ammo we either already know what ever is to be known about it or we look it up. We just got in a load of 40 S & W ammunition made by Winchester in 50 round White boxes. At first glance it doesn’t seem too  impressive. But let’s look under the hood so to speak. This is Winchester’s “Bonded” Jacketed Hollow Point. From reading reports on the ammunition, it seems to be a load that is reliable enough to have passed the tests for the FBI and is now a standard issue round.  The bullet is also used the Winchester’s Ranger ammunition line. The load that we got in is 180 grain Bonded JHP for the 40 S&W handgun.

What does the FBI look for when testing ammo? Good question. They want expansion without loosing mass. They want penatration without over penatration. And they want it to function their guns. This ammo passed all the tests. And then went on to win the “2010 Golden Bullseye Award” for Ammunition Product of the Year from “Shooting Illustrated:.

The ammunition delivers a 50 yard velocity of 968 fps with energy of 375 foot pounds.

So from the looks of it, if you need a good defense load for your 40 S&W, Winchester once again is coming up with a winner!

When we (that would be John or Caleb since I shoot a 45) shoot some I’ll let you know what we think compared with some of the other rounds we’ve fired.

Fall and reloading

Well we all know Ohio can be a dark gray place to live in the winter and fall. I think we even have even more cloudy days than that bastion of sunshine Seattle! But what better way to spend a cold day than getting ready for a warm sunny one! That’s right reloading and all that goes with it is what you need to be doing when the weather starts to turn. Right now I can hear ca-chunking of the luber as  John sits down stairs lubing bullets. He cast a bunch of wadcutters for his 45 LC.  Both he and Caleb have decided that it is a fun round to shoot. Even if they never do any Cowboy action. The revolver is a time tested piece of equipment  that most everyone that has done any shooting will own at least one of if not a half dozen or so.  John is really more fond of the 44 special. But since Caleb has been dragging over his to shoot… well he just can’t let the kid get one up you know.

Hope you got out to shoot while the weather was nice

About

This is supposed to be where I tell you all about us. OK here goes. We are and have been for 25 years known to some as J and C Sales. I know it isn’t  alphabetical but it is John and Cathy and now Caleb and John came up with the name so of course he’s first. We have raised our children by setting up at gunshows. I was all into that learning by example stuff. And the kids grew up in spite of me. When I do things I tend to get over involved and our business has been no exception. I got very vocal about Gun issues and politics. And before we knew it I got elected to the board of directors of Ohio Gun Collectors. I did that twice and then the NRA called and I got elected to that once. I was pulled in with Neal Knox. Now I know some people really liked Mr Knox and some did not. But he really knew his stuff about Gun Politics. And don’t kid anyone the NRA is all about Gun Politics. Anyway. I was elected the same year as Charlton Heston. I have pictures of him with me getting sworn in. I don’t think I have the one where he was leaning on my head. I’m 4’9″ and he was considerably taller.

So as you may start to see we have a few years of Firearm Industry Information behind us. John has been an avid reloader and shooting form many many years. And me I just tag along and shoot when and what I like. Mostly 45 acp. Caleb is all about anything that strikes his interest. But we both call back on John’s almost photographic memory when it comes to real shooting data. He has read it or done most of it. When the “Black Talon” load from Winchester was out we took all the different hollow points we had and tested their expansion. We don’t just read about this stuff we do it. And we found what worked well and what didn’t but that’s information for another day.  Many of the things you find in the writings of Elmer Keith John has tried to replicate. Not necessarily the hunting but the shooting. You  betcha!

We have always taken great pride in being honest with our customers and friends. In part that is why  I am sitting here writing to you some 25 years after we started this enterprise. We have watched many dealers some good some not so good come and go. Some times it isn’t about making the sell sometimes it is just about making a customer happy. So with that you have a feel for who we are. As time continues I hope you will like what you see and maybe enjoy a little shooting too~
